Behavioral Economics

Course Description

An introduction to the basic principles of conventional economics focusing on purely rational decision making contrasted to the more realistic behavioral economic model based on scientific studies of actual outcomes. Topics covered include the structure of the brain, loss-avoidance, emotions, experiences, social norms, framing, endowment effect, fairness, ethics, morals, trust, satisficing, status, herding, anchors, animal spirits, irrational exuberance, why smart people make investment mistakes, blurring social and financial arrangements, value of nudging people to make superior decisions, charitable donations, and happiness (money isn't everything).

ECON 5.-50Z-: This is an online class that does not have scheduled meetings. It's an 8-week class and will begin on May 6. Students can log in anytime to do the required weekly course work. Students must have access to a computer, the internet and an individual email address.     Just in time for this Saturday’s Enrollment Day open house, a new video series highlights the resources and community that students can find in De Anza’s six Village Centers.

    De Anza will host its annual Enrollment Day event for graduating high school students and their families on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Main Quad and other locations.

    Sixteen faculty members were granted tenure by the Foothill-De Anza district Board of Trustees on Monday, during a special celebration attended by Chancellor Lee Lambert and leaders from the college and district. Colleagues, deans and family members were also there to congratulate them.

    Meet the 2024 Tenure Recipients
    Four members of the De Anza College community will be honored in March with Excellence Awards from the national League for Innovation in the Community College. They were selected for their outstanding service to the college and its students.

    2024 Excellence Award Winners
    De Anza has received its first-ever grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, providing $150,000 for an ambitious, three-year effort to create and expand oral history programs focused on historically marginalized communities.
