FOR RELEASE: CONTACT: Lois Jenkins THREE MAJOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS AT DE ANZA IN APRIL CUPERTINO -- De Anza College will host three major community engagement events during the month of April. President Brian Murphy will speak at each. Details follow. "Debugging the Silicon Dream: Real Life in a Virtual World" California Studies Association Annual Conference The conference will also launch a South Bay Studies Working Group for researchers and practitioners engaged in building a deeper understanding of Silicon Valley in order to address its social issues. The many notable speakers will include Sarah Lacy, journalist, author and co-host of "tech-ticker," Yahoo Finance; Chris O'Brien, columnist, San José Mercury News; Terry Christensen, researcher, writer and political science professor, San José State University; Blanca Alvarado, former member, Santa Clara Co. Board of Supervisors; Raj Jayadev, founder, Silicon Valley DeBug magazine; and Dennis King, executive director, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Silicon Valley. Featured authors will include Ellen Ullman, "The Bug"; Paulina Borsook, "Cyberselfish"; and Patrick Dillon, "The Last Best Thing." Visit the conference Web site for more information. "Stand in the Place Where You Live" De Anza College Institute of Community & Civic Engagement (ICCE) Workshop The newest ICCE project is with the city of Cupertino's Block Leader and Leaders in Training Programs and Mark Linder, director of Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department. "Focus De Anza: Live the Change" De Anza College Environmental Advisory Group (CEAG) Sustainability Management Plan Event De Anza College is a green campus for a green community. Community members are invited to participate in this interactive event focusing on De Anza's Sustainability Management Plan (SMP), adopted by all levels of campus governance and one of the first such plans in higher education nationwide. CEAG developed and is implementing the plan and welcomes members from the community at large. The event will explore "living the change": daily actions to make the campus sustainable in regard to air, land and water as well as, more broadly, community vibrancy, environmental stewardship, social equity and financial responsibility. Using De Anza's award-winning Dining Services and its Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies as highlights, the CEAG team of students, faculty, staff and community members will show how the SMP process -- a "Plan-Do-Check-Act" approach -- provides a way to measure and continually reduce the college community's impact on the environment. The key areas of focus in De Anza's SMP include community and civic engagement; energy conservation and efficiency; green building construction and renovation; landscaping; purchasing; waste minimization and pollution; and water use.
