Youth and Student Leadership

Youth Voices United for Change is De Anza 's Annual Leadership conference, which connects high school and college students to community-based youth and student organizations. The conference offers workshops on a variety of youth-identified topics such as financing your college education, community building, exploring identity, self-empowerment, media training, and cultural and social activism. Community Partners and De Anza Student Organizations design and give the workshops.

Campus Camp Wellstone is an intensive and energizing training program that is open to De Anza students interested in gaining practical skills in progressive political action. Over 16,000 people have graduated from the camps since it began in 2003, and camps have been held in 39 states to date. During the camp, participants divide into three tracks:

  • Electoral Campaigns: Tools and Tactics for Success
  • Citizen Activism: Grassroots Advocacy and Organizing
  • Being a Candidate: How to Run and Win a Progressive Campaign

Each track has a distinctive curriculum taught by some of the nation's leading experts in grassroots politics and organizing. Three elements inform each track: progressive public policy, which lays out an agenda for action; grassroots community organizing, which builds a constituency to fight for change; and grassroots electoral politics, which provides tools for influencing and holding decision-makers accountable. The camp experience is scheduled for May 15-16, 2009 at the Sequoia Retreat Center.  The camp is offered through a two (2) units course listed in SOCS.   Students who wish to register for the camp, can also take advantage of SOSC/WMST 14 in the Spring 2010 quarter.

Community Service Learning (CSL)

Community Service Learning is a form of experiential education in which students apply knowledge, skills, critical thinking and good judgment to address genuine community needs. CSL can be required or can be attached as additional credit in G.E. courses from all disciplines at De Anza College.

Community Scholars in Residence

The Institute of Community and Civic Engagement (ICCE) promotes student self-empowerment and leadership in their communities through a variety of cultural and knowledge based activities. The Community Scholars in Residence program brings community organizers and leaders to De Anza College as educators to provide public lectures, workshops, and team-teaching opportunities for students and staff. For application information, see the link above or contact the ICCE office.

Community and Civic Engagement Certificate

The Leadership and Social Change certificate of achievement engages students in leadership development and community based/service learning. In addition to completing Social Science 17 Grassroots Democracy: Leadership and Power, students must complete a minimum of 14 units of academic credit in three categories: Leadership Skills, Understanding Social Change, and Other Requirements.

Internship Program

The ICCE Internship Program is designed to provide students with sustained experiential learning through placement with a non-profit/community-based agency. Students will connect their academic study with community and public service in order to strengthen communities, develop knowledge about public policy, and develop skills in public leadership through a wide variety of projects.

ICCE provides for internship placement in community organizations through the academic year. We work on a quarter system, fall, winter and spring programs. Student interns participate during one of the quarter programs.
