About De Anza Women's Tennis
We have had a successful team record, 7 conference championships, and two Nor Cal Championships and in 1998 we won the State Team Championship--the first Northern California team to achieve this honor. At least 11 single's and 7 double's teams have participated in State Individual Tournaments since then. There have also been an average of two double's and one single's player who have participated in the Nor Cal Championships since 1998.
The Coast Conference League is consistently one of the strongest leagues in Northern California. This competitive experience helps to build character as well as one's ability to play tennis.
The season consists of a maximum of 21 in-season matches, which includes at least two tournaments, 7 away and 7 home league matches and 3-4 scrimmages with teams out of our league.
If the team or an individual qualifies to participate in post-season competition, one' s season can consist of over a dozen more matches. The season starts in late January and ends in mid-May. Students are encouraged to participate in pre-season conditioning and advanced skills classes year round.
Academic Qualifications
Full-time student status (10 academic units and 2 units of "the intercollegiate tennis course," a total of 12 quarter units during the competitive season). Freshman or first-time competitors do not have a unit requirement pre-season. Sophomores or students who wish to compete for a second season must have completed 36 academic units prior to competing their second season. Our academic coordinator, Matt Trosper, can help you with more details in this area. Just call 408 864-8646.
Tennis Background
Any competitive experience is desired but not required. Our staff believes in working with students who desire to excel. Women who have "heart" and who are willing to commit to improving their physical stamina, knowledge of the game and tennis skills are encouraged to participate. Our students are from all ages and skill levels and have ranged from housewives and returning students to high school graduates. Some of our players are women who already have earned degrees but have never played intercollegiate tennis.Come out and work with us. Ladies, there will never be an opportunity such as this one!
More about the program
Our staff's goal is to improve the student athlete's physical stamina, agility, tennis technique and knowledge of the game. We also believe that academics are as important to the athlete as is tennis. Thus, amid the conditioning drills, playing the game and traveling, students are encouraged to study hard. Our athletes have moved on to play tennis at four-year institutions and others have chosen to move on to Berkeley and UCLA, for example, and may have given up their intercollegiate tennis careers. And still others have just enjoyed their two-year experience and go to work. The most fun part of the experience is spending time with a very diverse group of individuals.
Call the coaches at 408 864-8744 or come out to the courts to see us in the afternoon about 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays this Fall Quarter or Monday through Friday starting in January.
Ask questions, do not doubt yourself, satisfy your curiosity. We'd love to have you join us!
